Boy, am I excited! I have been lucky in my career. I have used many different chromatography techniques…both GC and LC…and used many different types of detectors. I have to be honest, I love mass spectrometers and I try to spend most of my time using one. I have spent some time working with LC-MS/MS but now I have a chance to try my hand at GC-MS/MS. We had a new instrument installed last week, the Thermo Scientific TSQ 8000 Triple Quadrupole GC-MS System.
It is so exciting to get a new instrument and dig in to see what it can do. Of course, a few of us already have ideas…there will be some work with hydrogen as a carrier gas and then we will concentrate on food safety and environmental work.
We were able to get some bells and whistles too. It is outfitted with a TriPlus RSH Autosampler. This thing is fast…glad there is a safety bar! We can use this system to perform standard liquid injections but also headspace analysis and SPME.
This is my first MS system that allows you to change the ion source WITHOUT venting the mass spec…pretty cool. My lab mate, Chris Rattray, works in the environmental market and shows off our new system and changing the source. I am sure we will be ‘discussing” the instrument schedule soon.
