CBDV and THCV on the Rxi-35Sil MS GC Column with Other Cannabinoids

We continue to use the 15m x 0.25mm x 0.25µm Rxi-35Sil MS for medical cannabis potency testing by GC-FID. Even though we don’t currently offer CBDV and THCV as reference materials, I wanted to find out where they eluted on the 35Sil MS because of their potential for being medically significant. CBDV apparently has demonstrated anti-epileptic and anti-convulsive activity, while THCV may be therapeutic for type 2 diabetes.

CBDV and THCV were obtained from BOC Sciences. CBC, CBD, delta-8-THC, delta-9-THC, CBG, and CBN were from Restek. A mixed standard of 100 µg/mL of each of the cannabinoids was prepared to generate the chromatogram below. CBDV and THCV retention times were confirmed by analyzing the stock solutions separately. One thing you’ll notice versus my other chromatogram on the Rxi-35Sil MS is that I’ve changed the oven start temperature from 225°C to 190°C to improve the peak shape for the more volatile CBDV. Otherwise, the GC conditions are the same. A lower oven start temperature eliminates peak splitting that can occur by poor focusing of earlier eluting components.

    Hi, Jack
A have a good question from a customer who has to do both cannabis potency and terpenoids, separately, by GC-FID. As he only has one inlet and one detector on his GC, it is a bit of a hassle for him to continuously replace the column (-5 type phase for cannabinoids and a Rxi-624Sil MS for terpenes). So, he asks if you have ever tried separating the cannabinoids on the Rxi-624Sil MS phase? I wonder what sort of selectivity it would show for the cannabinoids?
Thanks again for all the help and wonderful blog!
